I have started doing my shoulder presses, bicep curls and triceps presses as follows. I do 10 to a slow count of 4 up and 4 down then 5 to a 2 count up and 2 count down finishing with 5 regular. This really gets the muscles burning by the end of the set of 20.

It has been awhile since I updated this. Let me catch you up on what has happened. I got myself a Timex Heart Rate Monitor and I am very happy with it (it transmits a coded signal so the gym machines don’t pick it up but I just have to look at my wrist to see my heart rate). I kept up with the classes at the gym but due to a health issue we had to come home to New Jersey at the end of February (nothing serious just needed an NJ doctor for a second option). After getting home I did not start on the recumbent bike right away so I need a bit to get back in the habit (I miss the gym). Today I did do 30 minutes on the bike and then just some stretching afterward, Monday I will do more. Here are my numbers from this morning.

Second Week at the Gym

January 10, 2011

Today starts my second week at the gym. I did lose almost 1 pound last week so I think it might be helping, time will tell. Today was the Palates class (they call it Stretch and Strengthen but I know a palates class when I am in one). I think I am going to try the Shake Ur Groove Thing tomorrow at 8:15. Still need to get a new heart rate monitor, maybe I will go look for one today.


Circuit Training (first time ever)

For the first time I tried the 8AM Circuit Training class at the gym. Ok started out with side steps and swinging your arm a bit, I can do this. Then we got into doing weights on the upper body, not bad. Cardio, did you ever see a football player/team kind of squatting down with their legs wide and then running in place real fast? Well that is what we did for 1 minute, I almost died (try it sometime). Then it was back to the weights and squats and things I can’t remember, oh and 3 more sessions of cardio thrown in for good messure. All in all it was a great workout. I had to stop a few times to catch my breath or take a drink but I am going to go back next week for more. Oh Amy the instructor is very up beat and cheerful the whole time and very encouraging, she is an excellent instructor (last year I took her step classes). I definitely need a new heart rate monitor, after one of the cardio sessions it said my pulse was 87, I don’t think so. Tomorrow is back to stretch and sculpt and I am thinking of doing the Saturday morning spin class. No swimming today.


Total Body Workout

Today at the gym I did the Total Body Workout class and we did work out every part of our bodies in 45 minutes. Started with some cardio and then went to upper body and legs. The instructor kept us moving from one exercise to the next and kept out heart rates up. I enjoyed the class very much. Before class I did a short warm up on a recumbent bike only about 9 minutes.

First Bike Ride

On Tuesdays there are no classes at the gym that I like, or they start to early so I went for a bike ride. Two things, I have to figure out how the bike computer works (I haven’t used it all summer and I forgot) and I think I need a new heart rate monitor. I rode all the way to Arlo Guthrie’s house I forget how far that is but it is at least a 10 mile ride round trip. How every I do not have an accurate time, mileage or even heart rate data to record and I am a little upset about that. I am going to go try to figure out the bike computer and then look for a cheap heart rate monitor. I also need to get better organized as I forgot a sweat towel and water and had to stop at the local biker bar I passed to buy a water, very interesting place (a bit strange to see how crowded it was at 9:30AM and how many men were there drinking beer that early in the morning). Well tomorrow I will be going to the gym in the morning (by car, not up to biking there doing an hour class and biking home) for the Total Body Workout class, sounds interesting.
